I decided to only invite f.dsers to beta test, as it was where I learned Mafia and I wanted to try to replicate a lot of what makes f.ds Mafia so great.

But we don't really have enough users here for the level of activity that I would like, and those we do have divide their Mafia time between here and f.ds. I'm not complaining at all - I really value and appreciate the help and feedback I've received so far, and am definitely not trying to shut down f.ds Mafia.

So I would like to launch the main site as soon as feasible, and invite more people to participate. To that end, I've started the Info section with the goal of allowing anyone with any level of Mafia experience to start playing without too much trouble.

Here is what I want to get done before launching the main site:
- Keep working on the Info section.
- Add a Rules page that covers civility, external communication and trying to win, requiring players to agree to it before playing.
- Enable the text of the post you reply to to be shown on your post (probably a toggle to show/hide).
- Make sure the ratings system is working as intended (I haven't really tested it since making some changes).
- Update the database to allow emoticons. (Maybe. I'm not exactly sure how important it is or how tricky it will be, but it'll probably be easier now than after I have another database to worry about.)

Giving mods more control (modkills, subbing, changing the deadline etc) is also on my radar, but I don't think it's as much a priority since I will still be modding or co-modding most games for a while.

What else do you think should be done before launching? Starting the main site certainly represents a beginning rather than a finished product, and there will definitely still be errors and issues from time to time, particularly around updates. The goal for now is simply for the site to be good enough to invite people to as users rather than testers.

I will be continuing the Beta site for testing and behind-the-scenes discussions. Games run here will probably be more testing-focused, with quicker deadlines and the encouragement for players to focus on testing rather than trying to win. This will hopefully allow players to be in several games at once if necessary, without spending much time or mental energy on each. I may end up eventually discontinuing the Beta and doing testing and discussions in private games and threads on the main site.

So, let me know what you think.

Thoughts on doing a second "beta round" where each of us try to rope in at least one other person who may or may not even know how to play mafia. Then you can get a more "general population" opinion on how this site is laid out?

I'd probably hit up a gaming friend and my brother-in-law. Neither of them have experience with forum mafia I'm sure. And reasonably certain that they've played IRL 0-2 times tops.

I guess this is more or less what I'm imagining for the start of the main site. It'd be awesome if everyone invited some friends to join. But I guess it was always the intention to keep the Beta site for testing and the main site for more general use. And I feel like we're nearly ready for (and would benefit from) more general users.
